William: Ignore the camera and just talk to me. What’s your name?
Janine: Janine.
William: Cool name. It sounds French.
Janine: I think so. Yeah, it’s French, but I don’t really know the meaning. Many people ask me, but I’m not really sure what it means.
William: I ask people this. Is there any person or experience that was really… a beautiful thing or wonderful thing that you could tell me about? I know there are so many. Is there one that sticks out in your mind? Something you would tell your friends about.
Janine: Yeah, of course. In the very beginning of my trip I was in Koh Lanta (Lanta Island), in the south of Thailand. There was working there, a girl in the age of mine (the same age as me), like 22. And she was working in a bar, and in the night (at night) she had to sleep on the floor. And I had a big bungalow with two beds. So I told her, “come on you can sleep in my bungalow, because I have two beds, no problem”. Then we were together three weeks and we were very close. I left to Malaysia and then she invited me to stay with her and her family.
William: She speaks English?
Janine: Very well! Better than me. It’s amazing. She’s a musician, and she learned it just by listening to music, and looking on the Internet. It’s amazing. I have to ask her for words and something like this, yeah. She’s amazing.
William: In that sense, you were really able to communicate and be friends couldn’t you? Is that the first… you feel like you’re friends, yeah?
Janine: Yeah, of course. But when I went to her family, her mother and father, they cannot speak even one word in English. So yeah, it was, in the beginning really difficult, but I like to speak with your (my) hands and with your (my) face, and like this and… they were so lovely. It was really nice, and it was the best experience to see… to see the… how the people live. It’s amazing.
