Good Friends
On the Subway
John: What’s new?
Maya: Nothing new. We’re slightly delayed as usual, but nothing new.
John: Why are we slightly delayed?
Maya: Because of you.
William: We said, “7:00 prick”, and he wasn’t ready. (Prick means “exactly”) he was just “prick”. No, only joking. (Prick is also a bad name to call someone).
Maya: Do you want me to film you?
John: No, I’ve got myself in the mirror.
William: That’s something that they do in porn movies.
John: What do they do?
William: Get the mirrors all lined up; then you get all the angels. If you have enough mirrors, you don’t know how many people there are. And your left hand often feels like a stranger.
Maya: Look at me.
John: She looks like a little man dressed as a woman.
William: She’s like an 18th century Victorian woman.
Maya: I’m a man dressed as a woman.
Interview
John: OK. So probably my two best friends in Bangkok are William and Maya. William is from England and Mayas from Sweden. I met them because they live down the hall from me, only two doors down. And uhh, I really like the two of them. The three of us go to work together every morning. We talk in the taxi and on the subway and they put me in a good mood, which is important because, you have to be patient and in a good mood to teach English. Teaching English isn’t the toughest job in the world, but it’s not the easiest either.
Taxi Ride
John: William? What do you think about being a teacher?
William: I never thought it would happen to me.
John: You never thought it would happen to you?
William: Yeah.
John: What do you mean by that?
William: Maybe it’s something to do with the cyclic nature of Karma.
John: What did you do wrong to become a teacher?
William: I think it was the way I treated my teachers.
John: It was the way you treated your teachers. So that’s why you’re a teacher now?
William: Well perhaps this is just… this is just… Yes it’s Karma.
John: What are you going to do about this? Your life?
William: Wait for it to end. That’s the one positive thing about life. It doesn’t last long.
John: This is why I love William. He’s inspirational in the morning. Brightens up my day.
“Waiting for it to end.”
William: Let’s wait together.
John: And he has a girlfriend.
William: Ad he doesn’t.
John: And I don’t.
