Traveler Interview: "Asian Impressions"
William: What do you do back in Germany?
Rene: I’m an Engineer; working in the energy business. Producing generators and... that’s what I did the last three years.
W: Like mechanical engineer or electrical engineer.
R: It’s industrial engineering. And I use...
I buy technical parts to assemble generators for power plants.
W: You’ve been living or traveling in Cambodia? You were teaching in Cambodia or something?
R: Yes, that’s what I did before I came back here to Bangkok. I did it for almost a month now. Yeah, a great experience.

Rene: For me it’s 100% proven that intelligence or what you are, and what you would like to become or whatever. It’s mainly triggered by the environment you are born into. So I mean: we lived for example in the village where I was teaching, (there are) so many just wonderful and fantastic people who just don’t have the ability to express what they can do or what they are willing to do, which is really sad. You have the skill but you don’t have the opportunity which is really sad.

Rene: If you have any extra money or anything to spend it’s really needed, especially in Cambodia. And the education is one of the most important things you can have. That’s why I’m really happy I got a good education. And I see I can make use of that by contributing to the people and helping them in that matter as well.

Rene: So, for me it was, especially in Cambodia, sad to see how people can be left behind. Not by not having the skill to do it, but just not having the opportunity or the possibility. And everybody can make that a bit better by contributing. By spending some money or by being interested in what’s going on in the world. Then you can choose your action.

William: Is this your first time in Asia; this trip?

Rene: Yes. I’m here now since (for) three months, and it’s the first time in Asia.

I would say, I’m impressed about (by) how beauty in the world can be defined, and Asia opens up a completely new chapter into that (idea of beauty). You know, how people express themselves. In people’s faces, it’s new to me how people can look like and how people can act.

And as well, it brought as well to me, even if you’re really different in a lot of things (ways), it’s all pretty much the same, so you gain respect or you gain understanding and that makes the world even more a village, like you know. Which I very much like. It takes away our barriers. Because barriers usually trigger fear, but if you understand what it means (another culture), then you’re more open.

And what I like most; what I particularly like is the smiles I receive here. It’s much... It happens much more often and for no reason, and that’s the most important thing. Yeah, Asia in general is for me a place of good smiles and nice people. And yeah, that’s what I like.

William: Cool man. Great interview.
Wonderful experience. Enjoy India.

Masala180: "First Contact"
WILLIAM: When was the first time you actually met a real foreign person, and talked to them?

LAYKAH: When I was in junior high school, an American exchange student visited my classroom. She was staying with my math teacher and he brought her to our class. She was a tall white girl with curly blonde hair, so she really was very different from us. I thought she was the typical American girl.

WILLIAM: What did you think about meeting her?

LAYKAH: Well I couldn’t speak English very well, so I couldn’t talk to her, but I could ask for her autograph. We all wanted her autograph.

WILLIAM: You asked for her autograph? Why?

LAYKAH: I don’t know. Now that I think about it, I know it was very silly. At the time, we were just small town kids and we were so excited I guess. So we all asked her for her autograph.

WILLIAM: I’m sure she told that story when she went home. “Guess what Mom and Dad? Those Japanese kids wanted my autograph.” Very funny!

LAYKAH: You grew up in LA, and everyone comes from different places. How do you tell which people are foreigners? You all look different. Everyone is a foreigner, aren’t they?

WILLIAM: I guess the people who are not American citizens and maybe don’t speak English that well. They would be foreigners. But you’re right. It’s hard to tell.

LAYKAH: Not like in Japan. Basically, if you’re not Japanese, then you’re a foreigner. Even if you’re born in Japan, if your blood isn’t Japanese, you’re still a foreigner.

WILLIAM: Right. I was five when we moved to LA, so I don’t remember the first foreign person that I met. We had a neighbor from Iraq - he was a musician - and I used to go to his house and play with his kids, and listen to Iraqi music, and eat Iraqi food. He was really foreign to me. His name was Sadoon. I thought he was very strange and a little scary, but actually he was a very cool guy.

Nicknack Man:

City Stories No.01: Shanghai

Zhang makes his living in the backstreets of old Shanghai.

On my way into the city of Shanghai, and the train that runs from the airport to the city, is crazy fast! This was Day 01 of my new City Stories Project and I would have only one day to find interesting stories. So I had to move fast! I woke up early the next morning and headed to the center of Shanghai to meet my guide. I had no idea what would happen, but I thought maybe we could meet some interesting people. We started our walk around the city, and the first person we met was happy to share his story with us.

Zhang Jianguo: Nicknack Cart Owner

J: “I do this work just to make a living, actually.” We met Zang standing with his nicknack cart in one of the old and disappearing neighborhoods. Shanghai’s old neighborhoods have been destroyed and are almost gone forever. J: “I just sell this small stuff to the ordinary people around the market, in this area.”

How much can he make every day? Zhang’s nicknack cart is a throwback to the old days before modern convenience stores.
J: “1,000 RMB every month...average.”

“I do this because I don’t have any other skills for me to make a living...”

Is that enough for him? Does he have a family?
J: “My wife also does this business, but in another area. My son is studying in school, but I’m not a Shanghainese. My son is living in another province; Ang We province which is near Shanghai.”

What does he like about this job? What’s the best thing about it?
J: “I’m currently making enough money for my life here in Shanghai. I do this because I don’t have any other skills for me to make a living, that’s why I just do this.”

Does he have a dream for the future? Like the neighborhood we found him in, I think men like Zhang and his nicknack cart will soon disappear.
J: “My future is more focused on my kids, because his future is my future. I may plan to go back to my hometown, a few years later, but now I’m here to make money.”

Good luck to him! Thanks you very much. I’m going to buy something. I’m not sure what I need, but I’ll find something to buy.

Simple men, with simple livelihoods like Zhang, are quickly disappearing in this fast changing world. I wonder how long he and his cart can survive.

A Crazy Student:
One Minute Story no.01
Tracy from the USA had a wild experience with a crazy student in Korea.

Hello, my name is Tracy and I’m from Kansas City, USA. I’m an English teacher in Seoul, Korea, and this is my One Minute Story. I used to teach at an “English Village”, and we used to teach a variety of different subjects. One of them was cooking. Cooking was a very fun subject to teach. However, it involved the use of knives, and sometimes crazy children. My story that I can recall is; we had a group one week, and the boys were exceptionally crazy. We were cooking and there were many tables around...and sharp knives.

One of the boys jumped up on the table and started swinging the knife around, and I was stuck behind the counter. So some of the other students were trying to get him, but they couldn’t. He was leaping from table to table with the knife, and I was feeling very scared and a little crazy myself. Until finally, I caught him, got the knife and sent him out. That was my most memorable teaching experience while I was in Korea.

“That was my most memorable teaching experience while I was in Korea.”

William: Did he get in trouble for that? Tracy: Oh, he did. He got very much in trouble. And we found out later that the school was for troubled children, which I didn’t know at the time. So yes, he was sent out for the rest of the week-long camp. Even thinking about it my heart is beating very quickly. End!

A Terrible Journey:
One Minute Story no.01
Eric from the USA talks about his terrible travel experience on a train in Vietnam.

ERIC: My name is Eric. I’m from the States and I’m a teacher in South Korea. One of my favorite things to do is to travel. A few years ago, I was in Vietnam, traveling through the country. I really like to travel by train, so I took a train from Hanoi, down to Hoian. Now, in Vietnam, when you travel, they have overnight trains that you can sleep in. Most of the trains (compartments) fit about six people comfortably. So I went to the station and I bought a ticket. I got into the train. It started off wonderfully, and I was thinking, “Great! This is going to be a wonderful 14 hour trip.

“It was possibly the worst train experience of my life.”
We make a stop about an hour in. A few more people get into the car. At this point it’s full. We’ve got six people. We go about 30 minutes more and stop again. Some more people get in and I’m thinking this seems strange. Now we’ve got six people that were originally there and then about three more, so we’ve got nine. We go about another half hour and a couple more get in. Another half hour and a couple more get in, and these two women are pregnant. So at this point we have fourteen people, in a small train car; maybe six feet long; maybe six feet wide. For the remaining 13 hours or 12 hours of the trip, we spent time crammed together, trading off on the floor; with pregnant women getting sick. It was possibly the worst train experience of my life. That’s it.

William: How much did that nightmare train cost?
Eric: You know what. It was not cheap enough. I don’t remember; maybe $10 dollars or something like that. End!
Lesson Question!

Masala180 No.02: “Our Memories”

WILLIAM: What are your best childhood memories? You know, growing up in a seaside village.

LAYKAH: My friends and I used to go on hikes and have picnics up on a hill that overlooks the ocean. We would make an “onigiri” lunch. Along the way we picked wild berries. There is a small bay, with a sandy beach, where we would eat lunch and play in the water. That was my favorite place as a kid. I often remember that time in my life.

WILLIAM: It sounds nice. We did exactly the same thing but a bit different, because my friends and I were pretty bad. Next to our apartment building was a large supermarket. We also liked to have picnics, but we would steal all the food from the supermarket. Really stupid!

LAYKAH: What? You stole food from the supermarket?

WILLIAM: I don’t know why we did it. It was exciting I guess. We would make a shopping list and each one of us would steal something from the list. Lunch meat, bread, cheese, potato chips and sodas; everything we needed for a nice lunch. Now that I think about it, I’m embarrassed. I’m embarrassed by a lot of things I did as a kid.

LAYKAH: Didn’t you get caught?

William: No, we never did. Back then they didn’t have security and cameras in supermarkets. Nobody cared or watched you. It was easy for kids to steal anything. It was very stupid, but easy. We enjoyed our sandwiches. Didn’t you do anything bad as a kid? Or were you the perfect angel?
LAYKAH: Yeah, I did, but you can’t write about it.

WILLIAM: What? What did you do?

LAYKAH: I can only say it involved my junior high school friend, a bus trip, a department store, and Hello Kitty stationary. That’s all I will say.

WILLIAM: Did you steal Hello Kitty stationary?

LAYKAH: I won’t say! It’s copyrighted. I mean it’s top secret. If I tell you, then I have to kill you. End!

*Masala180 is my real life family adventure. The story of my relationship, my family and our experience living and traveling in different countries and cultures. Enjoy!*

Impressions of Calcutta
Driving into the city of Calcutta you know immediately that you’re in a different world. This is India, for sure, and this city is as India as it gets. I guess I should call it Kolkata since Calcutta is the old British name. I could also call it dangerous. The traffic, the noise, the heat and pollution are intense. After only five minutes walking on the streets I was almost run over by a speeding bus. Life in the streets and life on the streets are the best and worst things about this city. The people, the music, the rickshaws and the business of day to day life; it’s all out in the open for you to watch and listen to and enjoy. When you come to India, you’re always taking a few steps back in time. You’re just never going to see a herd of goats moving down a city street in London, or Tokyo, or even Bangkok for that matter. But in Kolkata, it’s life as usual for the 15 million people who call it home, and what an unusual life it is.
"When you come to India,
you’re always taking a few steps back in time."
Kolkata is known as the “cultural capital” of India, because many famous artists, writers and poets come from this city. For me, the best thing about it was the fresh sugar cane juice served over ice with lime. It’s absolutely fantastic and refreshing on a hot day; and everyday is hot in Kolkata. Life starts early and the days are long. After two days, it was time for us to move on. I wasn’t there long enough to say I know the city, but I have my first impressions. The people are colorful and full of life and song, but it’s not an easy life. The poverty is unbelievable. But we should remember what Mother Teresa once said, that “Loneliness is the most terrible poverty.” She gave her life and soul to this city and she knew it well. It’s true that thousands of people live, work, and eat on the streets, but there are so many of them that they never do it alone. They live with a certain sense of togetherness and community. They are terribly poor, but at least they are not lonely.End!
