このプロジェクトは、５６人の若い尼と孤児たちに、スクール・キット(学校用文房具セット)、ベーシック・ヨガ、英語のレッスンの改善、かんたんな折り紙教室を届け、僕たちが体験することすべてを短編映画にするいうものです。

OK! Thanks for all the wonderful support.
Now I am traveling to Yangon to deliver the School Kits and shoot the Short Film. I’ll try my best to collect many interesting stories, pictures, sounds and video. Be back next week. Take it easy and have a nice weekend. SEE YA!

“Books For Better English”
In two days I’ll be in Yangon!
I can’t believe the time has come to go back to Burma.
I’m very excited to go back to Burma and deliver the gifts.
Today I bought new English books for the Children’s English classes.
6 Student Books and 6 Workbooks – for grades 1-6 of Elementary School.
These books will really help the teachers at the nunnery school.
The last time I was there, they had NO books at all.
The teachers were making the English lessons from their imagination.
Mostly they just made long lists of words for the students to MEMORIZE.
Very Boring For The Students I Think, and NOT very organized.
These books should be much better and MORE FUN for the students.
Hopefully the teachers can use IDEAS from the books to make better lessons.
Or they can PHOTOCOPY the pages and give to the students.
I will try to give them some good teaching ideas when I visit the school.
OH YEAH!!! Also, today we got to School Kit #56…WOW!
So ALL the school kits have been sponsored and I’m really happy about that.

“Should Tourists Visit Burma?”
Should Tourists Visit Burma?
This is a really good question and there is NO really good answer.
Aung San Suu Kyi has asked travelers NOT to visit her country.
She knows that tourist MONEY helps the military government.
This is true and I respect her opinion 100%.
It’s her country and she understands the situation 100%.
I do choose to visit Burma…
BUT I try to visit the country in a “Responsible Way”.
Meaning I try to help the ordinary people and NOT the government.
Here’s what I recommend:
All travelers to Burma should…
Keep LOCAL & SMALL.
Travel to the country independently – NOT on guided tours.
Stay in small local Guesthouses – NOT expensive hotels.
Eat at small local Restaurants – NOT expensive tourist places.
Buy from small local markets – NOT from guided tourist shops.
Talk with the local people – NOT only your “official” guide.
Give back something if you can – Like this Do Good project.
I’ll try my best to spend my money with Local and Small businesses.
I’ll try my best to create successful “Do Good” projects.
Then my visits to Burma will help ordinary people and NOT the government.
That’s my goal!

“Burma VISA”
Today I picked up my Tourist Visa for Burma (Myanmar).
It’s not difficult to get. Only took 2 days and cost about 25$ USD.
Over the past 15 years, I’ve gotten many visas from many different countries.
The interesting thing about the Burma Visa, are the QUESTIONS they ask.
They ask some really STUPID questions on the Visa Application!
Questions I’ve NEVER seen on other visa applications.
For example:
- Your Father’s Full Name
I have no idea why they need my father’s name.
- Your Race
This question I have never seen on another visa application. Why should they ask?
- Your Skin Color
This is a really STUPID question…especially because you give 2 Photos with the application.
They should just look at the photos!
- Your Religion
OK, maybe the strangest question of all. Why do they need to know my religion?
- Work History!?
The 2nd page of the application is to give your work history for the past 4 Jobs!
CRAZY! I don’t want a JOB from the country of BURMA…I’m just a tourist!
When I turned in the application the man actually read my full work history.
He really took his time and checked every word.
I wonder what he was looking for?
Father’s Name?
Your Race?
Your Skin Color?
Your Religion?
Work History?
Unbelievable!
Anyway, it’s easy enough to give the information.
But you can understand that the government of Burma is a bit STRANGE!
Well, maybe VERY STRANGE!

“Freedom Lives”
There is NO COUNTRY in the world that is 100% FREE.
Every country has rules, laws, customs, and traditions.
There is NO PERSON in the world that is 100% FREE.
People must follow the rules, laws, customs, and traditions.
Burma is NOT a free country… Not 100%.
BUT, Japan, and the USA, England, France…They are also NOT FREE… Not 100%.
We may be MORE FREE than people in Burma.
People in Burma may be LESS FREE than us.
But it’s a matter of MORE FREE or LESS FREE.
None of us are TOTALLY FREE… Not 100%.
I love Freedom!
I want to be Free!
But I think “Real Freedom” lives in the MIND.
To THINK FREELY is very important to me.
The truth is that every country in the world…every culture and every government…They try to control how we THINK, what we DO, and how we LIVE.
They try to control our BELIEFS, our IDEAS and HOW WE SEE the world.
Sometimes the control is for GOOD reasons. Sometimes the control is for BAD reasons…BUT, it’s still
CONTROL.
So I’m not free!
You’re not free!
The people in Burma are not free.
Not 100%!
But we should remember that Real Freedom Lives in our MINDS!
How we THINK is the most important thing.

“Finding Your Way”
How do we find our “WAY” in this life?
This question is always on my mind.
What I mean by “WAY” is a path or direction that has MEANING & PURPOSE.
MEANING & PURPOSE are the most important things…I think.
I know that in Japan, more than 30,000 people kill themselves every year.
I think most of these people cannot find MEANING or PURPOSE in their lives.
With NO MEANING and NO PURPOSE they give up on life.
For me I think PURPOSE comes first.
Finding something you want to do.
Finding somewhere you want to go.
Finding someone you want to be.
These are what I mean by PURPOSE.
You have a dream, a goal, a personal challenge, and you have to reach it.
This is your PURPOSE.
If you have no dreams, no goals, no challenges…
Then you have NO PURPOSE.
With NO PURPOSE you can have NO MEANING.
With NO MEANING life can be very difficult.
So I think “THE WAY” begins with a dream, a goal, or a personal challenge.
If you are chasing one of these, you have found your “PURPOSE”.
When you find your PURPOSE then you will find your MEANING.
When your life has PURPOSE & MEANING you can do anything.
That’s “THE WAY”.

How to deliver the School Kits?
My plan was make the 56 School Kits here in Thailand.
BUT, now I don’t know if I can enter Burma with them.
I might have a BIG problem at the airport in Yangon.

I am not sure for school kits with you on the airplane, at the Yangon Airport.
Sometimes there’s a problem and sometimes no problem.
It depends on LUCK.
They may think you want to SELL the school kits in Burma.
If you say the school kits are “donations”, you need official papers.
Sometimes you can pay a small amount of money to the airport officials.
Sometimes it’s a large amount of money. Sometimes they say NO!
I cannot say exactly what will happen if you bring school kits with you.
Sorry about that. Maybe you should buy and make the school kits here in Yangon.

“Betel Nut Burma”
Do you know “Betel Nut”?
If you’ve traveled through India, China, South East Asia or the Pacific Island you may have seen people chewing Betel Nut.
It’s an important cultural activity that’s thousands of years old.
Actually, it’s the “ARECA nut” that is wrapped in the “BETEL leaf” and chewed.
Together they act as a mild “Stimulant”. Not so different from drinking coffee.
It’s easy to notice someone chewing Betel Nut, because it turns their mouth “RED”.
You can see this picture of a young boy in Yangon enjoying a mouth full of Betel Nut.
In Burma it’s called “KUNYA”.
Both men and women chew it, but I think “modern” young people are dropping the tradition.
For them it’s more important to have healthy white teeth, than a mouth full of red stuff.
Chewing Betel Nut is not healthy. It has been shown to cause cancer and destroy the teeth.
Even so, it’s a very important tradition in so many countries.
It may be compared to Sake in Japan… with so many social and traditional aspects.
Although I don’t think Sake is unhealthy, it does have a deep and rich tradition.
In Japan, Sake is MUCH MORE than just a cup of Rice Wine.
And in many Asian cultures Betel Nut is MUCH MORE than just some Areca nut wrapped in Betel leaf.
In Vietnam for example, the Areca nut and the Betel leaf together form the symbol of Marriage.
It’s believed that they make the “Perfect Pair” a man and a woman in love.

“Rich Or Poor”
One reason I want to do this project is because…honestly, it’s a bit crazy.
If we had a lot of money, it would be easy.
BUT, we don’t have any money, so this project is a big challenge.
I can easily say that we’re “Poor” at this moment, but I can also say we’re “Rich”.
BUT, what is this idea of “Rich or Poor”?
Are we rich or are we poor?
If we’re talking about MONEY, then we are “Poor”.
BUT, if we’re talking about “ideas, opportunities, and dreams”, then we are “Rich”.
So how should I SEE the situation?
If I can only see that we have NO money…
Then I become SELFISH. I only think about myself and my situation.
BUT, if I can see the power we have to communicate and work with others…
Then I can think about HELPING other people.
Helping people who really are “Poor”.
So it’s a bit crazy, but it’s a good challenge for us.
It’s not an easy challenge…that’s why it’s a good.
We’ll try our best!

“Step By Step”
“A journey of one thousand miles begins with the first step.”
Sometimes the first step is the most difficult.
Sometimes the first step is impossible.
We finished the first steps of this project and it feels good.
The idea is organized and the plan is set.

People know about the project. Some have helped us.

There is so much work to do.
We’re a long way from our goal, but so far so good!
The first steps were not so difficult after all.

“Yangon At Night”
I wandered around the streets of Yangon at 2am.
What a cool experience! What a strange experience!
There were very few people out at that time.
I walked down long empty back streets.
Looking and listening for noises in the dark.
Taking pictures of parked cars and empty buildings.
The lights and the shadows and the quiet kept me company.
What a peaceful city Yangon is at night. I was so surprised.
Living in Bangkok I’m used to 24hours of noise.
But in Yangon, the streets go silent and dark, soon after midnight.
Yangon likes to go to bed early. There is no nightlife.
It seems like people are afraid of being out too late.
Afraid of what…I don’t know. I never felt unsafe.
There was no one around to make me feel unsafe.
Just me and my camera and my curiosity…

“The Future of Travel”
Lately something called “Voluntourism” is becoming popular.
That means Volunteer + Tourism. It’s also called a “Volunteer Vacation”.
Many people are choosing this kind of holiday for themselves.
They’re looking for a “deeper and richer” travel experience.
They get on a plane and fly thousands of miles to visit a foreign country.
“Only shopping and eating” is not enough for them. They want to HELP!
They go places where they can work to help others or the environment.
It’s estimated that more 60 million Americans have done this type of travel.
I hope it’s the future of travel for all of us.
The world is changing so fast.
It’s getting smaller every day.
What used to take weeks now takes days.
What used to take days now takes hours.
You can go anywhere in the world in about 24 hours.
It’s one big global community.
It’s OUR global community.
And we can help.

“Why Burma?”
In 1989 the country’s name was changed from “the Union of Burma” to “the Union of Myanmar”.
Myanmar is now the “Official English Name” of the country.
But some people still call it “Burma”. I still call it “Burma”. WHY?
In the Burmese language, the country has TWO names.
MYANMA is used when WRITING the country name.
BAMA is used when SPEAKING the country name.
Both names are used by outsiders from Europe and Asia.
Europeans usually use the name Bama or Burma.
Asians usually use the Myanma or Myanmar.
In 1948, Burma became an independent country and chose the name “Republic of Burma”.
In 1962, the country was taken over by a military government.
(This government was not chosen by the people. There is NO democracy in Burma.)
In 1974, they changed the name to “the Union of Burma”.
In 1989, the government changed the name again to “the Union of Myanmar”.
So WHY do we call the country Burma?
Not all people or countries recognize the current government.
The government was NOT chosen or elected by the people or Burma.
So they also don’t recognize the name change.
The USA and the U.K. both do not recognize the government.
So many Americans and British still call the country Burma.
I also agree that the current government should NOT be recognized.
So I still call the country Burma.

“Little Hopscotch Girl”
It was late in the afternoon.
I walked and looked and enjoyed the city all around me.
Everything was strange, new and exciting. I loved it.
Something caught my eye and I looked down a small alley.
Something green, moving, hopping, smiling; a little girl.
She was playing by herself. She was playing Hopscotch.
Hopscotch is a fun little game that is played all over the world.
I think it’s called “KenKen” in Japan.
I haven’t seen Hopscotch in many years.
It brought back many memories.
She continued to play as I filmed. She didn’t notice me at first.
When she did realize I had a camera, she became very excited.
She ran to me, wanted to see the video, laughed and smiled.
I took her picture.
Such a beautiful little girl in that small alley…

“Under The Surface”
Walking the streets of Yangon was an interesting experience.
On the surface the people may seem “cold “ and “unfriendly”.
I met some travelers who did not have a good impression of the city.
I can understand; some of the people ARE unfriendly, even suspicious.
But not all of them are that way.
We have to remember that the Burmese people are not FREE!
We have to remember that life is very difficult in Burma.
The military government controls everything.
Everyone is afraid of the military government.
People are unhappy with the situation but they cannot say anything about it.
They cannot do anything about it.
It’s a different and serious world they live in.
I walked the streets and smiled at the people.
Not everyone smiled back, but I kept smiling.
I just kept smiling at every person I met.
And there under the “cold” surface, I found their smiles.

“Dad The Hero”
My father is a Jazz musician and a music teacher, in Los Angeles, California.
For 40 years he has made his living traveling and playing music all over the world.
It’s amazing because most musicians only dream of being professional.
Well, he dreamed it and he did. It’s not been easy but he never gave up.
He’s not rich and he’s not famous, but he’s doing what he LOVES to do.
Not only does he play music and teach music, but he also helps poor children.
His organization provides free musical instruments and music lessons to poor kids.
These kids have no money for instruments and no opportunity for music lessons.
My father believes every child should have access to music and art programs.
Last month, a big TV station, selected my father as a “Local Hero”.
Yeah…he is a local hero and he’s also “My Hero”…
and my inspiration to do this Burma Project!!!

“My Good Friend’s BLOG”
My friend from Kyoto, Japan wrote about my family on His BLOG.
His name is Mitsue Masashi. He’s an amazing travel photographer and writer.
I’ve known Masashi for several years. We’ve traveled together twice in the past.
We hope to go on more adventures together in the future.
Sadly, my Japanese is not good enough to read his writing. I enjoy the pictures.
It’s OK because I talk with him often and he tells me his stories in person.
Masashi speaks English very well, so we can discuss almost any topic.
It’s because we can communicate that we could become such good friends.
I think we understand each other very well, and I can learn so much from his experience.
My wife loves the way he writes and says that it’s “beautiful Japanese”. I’m sure it is.
His pictures are amazingly beautiful, and full of life and happiness and smiles.

“From The Heart”
We received such beautiful and thoughtful gifts yesterday.
Gifts that we will deliver to the 56 nuns and orphans in Burma.
Wonderful Origami books, paper and animals!
All donated by our Mixi friend. All donated from the heart.
I wanted to introduce the children to something from Japanese culture.
Maybe Origami is the perfect way to share the “spirit of Japan”.
It will be the first time for most of them to experience Origami.
It’s fun and creative and beautiful and easy to do.
I’m sure the children will really enjoy these magical little gifts.
There’s something special about Origami; more than just folding paper.
You sit quietly, concentrating, and making something with your hands.
Making something “from the heart”; it’s very special indeed.

“Day By Day”
I hope to make a short movie about our “Do Good” project and trip to Yangon.
It’s such a beautiful place and I love filming and taking pictures there.
I have so many very nice stories from my first visit to Yangon.
When we travel to Burma in April, I will film many more.
We don’t have detailed plans.
We’ll just let things happen naturally.
I really think we can make something beautiful and special.
I believe we can tell a wonderful story with a nice message.
We plan that Book 02 will include the diary, stories, pictures and DVD short movie.
Of course this time I’ll travel with my family.
We’ll explore Yangon, and stay with the nuns and orphans for a few days.
Then we’ll travel outside Yangon and see more of the country.
I think the whole experience will make a great short story.
We’ll just let it happen step by step…Day By Day!

“Lights Out”
In Yangon, Burma, the power is cut off for a few hours every day.
During those times the only electricity comes from gas generators.
There are no street lights, and most of the buildings go dark.
The televisions go quiet and the Internet cafés are is closed.
But the people continue about their business as usual.
At night the streets are full of people eating or drinking tea by “candle light”.
The many sidewalk food stands use car batteries to power small light bulbs.
I enjoyed walking out at night and just wandering around with no place to go.
When the city is dark, the streets feel mysterious…even dangerous.
You can’t see anything clearly and there are shadows moving everywhere.
I never felt unsafe and the people were always friendly.
But it was a new experience to walk around a city with “Lights Out”.

“We are not powerless”
Everyone knows there are real problems in the world.
Most of us want to do something, but we feel powerless.
When I met Daw Thu Nandar, and listened to her story, I realized we are not powerless.
We all can do something if we really want to do it.
Since age 9, she dreamed of becoming a nun, but her parents did not allow it.
As the only daughter she had many family responsibilities.
At 17 she made up her mind to follow her dream…to become a nun.
She sold vegetables in the local market and saved her money, day by day.
At the age of 20, after three years of work, she finally reached her goal.
She could pay for her Nun Ceremony, without her family’s help.
A nun’s life is not easy and there have been many challenges.
But she’s dedicated her life to serving others and that’s what she’s doing.
I was very inspired by her story, and her amazing work.
I know I’m not powerless!
I know you’re not powerless either.

“Micro Charity”
In 2006, Muhammad Yunus won the Noble Peace Prize.
He is the man who developed the idea of “Micro Credit”.
He realized that if you gave very little money, to very poor people, they could do a lot.
His organization in Bangladesh gives small loans for people to start small businesses.
And it works! He has helped thousands of people make.
The idea of Micro Credit was so successful, that it spread around the world.
Today there are many developing countries with micro credit programs.
The basic idea is that “a little goes a long way…when you have nothing”.
To help people who are poor, you don’t have to give so much.
I think of this project as a “Micro Charity”.
There is a small group of children in Burma who have NOTHING.
So our small gifts, our small donations, will means a lot to them.
A little goes a long way, especially when it’s given from the heart.

“Body Mind & Spirit”
This “Do Good” project has one goal:
To help the 56 young Nuns and Orphans at the Myaing Nunnery and Orphanage.
Our plan is to help them in a way that benefits each child’s Mind, Body & Spirit.
We plan to do the following…
SCHOOL KITS: These are practical but also include “creative tools” like paints and colored pencils.
BASIC YOGA: A basic Yoga routine will help keep the kids strong and healthy, inside and outside.
ENGLISH LESSONS: I will help their volunteer teachers plan more fun and effective English lessons.
EASY ORIGAMI: This is a nice way to give the children something from Japanese culture.
It’s not much, but it’s what we can do.
I’m not sure every child will can enjoy every activity we do with them.
But I know every child will enjoy something and grow a little…in body, mind and spirit.
If that happens, then maybe our project was a success.

“Yangon Surprise”
I first visited Yangon, Burma, in April 2009.
I went to make a travel video for Lonely Planet TV.
The city and the people surprised me very much.
In many ways it was like being in India, but less crowded.
The faces of the people, many of them Muslim, were very beautiful.
I thought it might be difficult to shoot video, but it wasn’t.
The people were much more open and friendly than I thought they would be.
Maybe the biggest surprise of all…there are NO motorbikes in Yangon.
There are cars and buses, but the city is much more pleasant without the motorbikes.
I knew when I left Yangon I wanted to go back.
Now we have a chance to go back…
…and this time, we’re going to give back.

“Time To Do Good”
Today is February 1st and we have about 60 Days until we travel to Yangon.
“Do Good”…Burma 2010 is our first Charity Project!
Actually it was January 1st that Laykah and I decided to do this project.
It’s our New Year’s Resolution to do something good this year.
January was for planning and thinking about what we could do exactly.
We don’t have much. We can’t do much. But we can do SOMETHING!
SOMETHING IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN NOTHING!
So it’s time to start our first “Do Good” project!
We’re pretty excited about it, but there’s a lot of work to do.
