Rickshaw Journey: Podcast #17
Have you ever thought about taking a really long bike trip? How about riding your bicycle from Okinawa to Hokkaido? Now that’s a long ride. Better yet, let’s forget the bicycle and ride something more fun and exotic.
Well, my good friend from Kyoto Japan is going to do exactly that. He plans to ride a Three Wheeled Bangladeshi Rickshaw the full length of Japan. That’s right, three wheels, one speed, and one break. Crazy!
It’s not an easy thing to pedal that big monster all over Japan. He’ll zigzag his way north and cover more than 4,000km in about 5 months. Stopping along the way to take pictures, write stories and meet wonderful people.
His name is Mitsui Masashi and he’s an amazing travel photographer and writer.
With more than 40 countries and 5 books behind him, this will be the first time he’s traveling and shooting pictures in Japan. It’s a big adventure that will take him up and down and around the beautiful land of the rising sun. Fantastic!
We spoke a few days ago. He’s just returned from Bangladesh and he feels strong and confident. The local people in Bangladesh were quite interested in this strange Japanese pedaling around the countryside. He even made it into one of the city newspapers; a real celebrity.
He figures to start his Japan journey in February. As Spring approaches, he’ll first ride around the Island of Okinawa, enjoying the sunshine, and then on to the mainland.
Through his camera lens and unique perspective, I’m sure Masashi will be able to capture the soul of his own country and its people…especially their smiles.
